Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 2, 2026
The short version. You tell us private, precious things so we can write a book. We use them for that book and nothing else. We don't sell your information, we don't train AI on your stories or photos, and we delete previews nobody bought after 90 days. You can ask us to delete everything at any time.
1. Who we are
Butterpages is a trading name of GIZENO LTD, registered in Cyprus (Reg. No. HE 493133), Pafou 28, 4630 Erimi, Cyprus. We decide how your personal information is used (we are the "controller"). Questions or requests: hello@butterpages.com.
2. What we collect
- Your quiz answers: the name of the person the book is for, what you call them, their relationship to you, the occasion, their age, the traits and things they love that you pick, your memories and stories, and the message for the last page.
- The photo you upload of that person.
- Your email address, to send you the preview and your book.
- After you order: your extra answers, which lines you approved, your name, the shipping address and phone number (carriers need a phone number), and what you bought. Your card details go straight to Stripe.
- Messages you send us.
- Technical data: IP address, device and browser type, the pages you visit and how you got to us, through cookies and similar tools (see section 8).
Stories often include sensitive things, like an illness or a loss. Only share what you want in the book. We use it only to write the book you asked for.
3. About the person in the book
We usually get information about the person in the book from you, not from them. We use it only to make the book. If you are the person in a book and want your information deleted, write to us and we will do it.
4. How we use it, and why we're allowed to
| What we do | Legal basis (EU law) |
|---|---|
| Write and illustrate your preview and book, have a person check it, deliver it, print and ship it, and help you with your order | To provide what you asked for (contract) |
| Email you about your preview and your order | Contract, and our legitimate interest in keeping you informed |
| Send up to two reminders about a preview you haven't finished. Every reminder has a link to stop them | Legitimate interest. You can object at any time |
| Keep the site safe, prevent fraud and abuse, fix problems | Legitimate interest |
| Measure and improve the site and our advertising | Legitimate interest, or your consent where the law requires it |
| Keep accounting and tax records | Legal obligation |
We never use your photo or stories to train AI models, and we never sell your personal information. We don't make decisions about you by automated means that have legal or similarly significant effects.
5. Who we share it with
Only with companies that help us run Butterpages, under contracts that let them use your information only to provide their service to us. The AI providers are not allowed to train their models on it.
| Company | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | Writes the text of the book from your answers | USA |
| Google (Gemini API) | Draws the pictures from your photo and the story | USA |
| Vercel | Hosts the website and stores files privately | USA |
| Neon | Database for orders and answers | USA |
| Stripe | Takes payments. We never see your card number | USA, Ireland |
| Lulu Press | Prints and ships hardcovers. Gets the book files, name, address, phone and email | USA |
| Resend | Sends our emails | USA |
| PostHog | Measures how people use the site, without selling the data | EU, USA |
| Meta | Measures whether our ads on Facebook and Instagram work | USA, Ireland |
Lulu passes your address and phone number to the delivery carrier. We may also share information when the law requires it, to protect our rights, or with a buyer if our business is sold, who would have to respect this policy.
6. Information sent outside the EU
We are based in the EU, and most of our providers are in the United States. Those transfers are protected by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
7. How long we keep it
- Previews nobody bought: deleted after 90 days, including the photo, answers, pictures and email address.
- Finished books: your answers, photo, pictures and book files are kept for 2 years, so you can download your book again or order another copy. Then they are deleted.
- Order and payment records (order number, amounts and dates) are kept for 6 years, because tax law requires it.
- You can ask us to delete your information sooner. We will, except for what the law makes us keep.
8. Cookies and similar tools
- Needed: your browser saves your quiz answers on your own device while you fill in the quiz, so nothing is lost if you leave. These stay on your device.
- Analytics: PostHog tells us which steps of the quiz people finish, so we can make it better.
- Advertising: the Meta pixel tells Meta when someone who saw our ad takes the quiz or buys, so we can measure our ads and show them to people who are likely to care.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser. We honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal as a request to opt out of advertising cookies and of the "sharing" described in section 10.
9. Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- tell you what information we have about you, and give you a copy
- correct it
- delete it
- stop or limit how we use it, or object to a use based on our legitimate interests
- send it to you in a common file format
- stop reminder emails (use the link in the email, or write to us)
Email hello@butterpages.com from the address you used with us. We answer within one month, and it's free. Where we relied on your consent you can withdraw it at any time. You can also complain to the Cyprus Commissioner for Personal Data Protection (dataprotection.gov.cy) or to the data protection authority where you live.
10. US state privacy rights
Residents of California and other US states with privacy laws have the rights above, plus the right to opt out of "targeted advertising" and the "sharing" or "sale" of personal information. We don't sell personal information for money. Using the Meta pixel for advertising may count as "sharing" or "targeted advertising" under some of these laws. To opt out, turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser or email us. We won't treat you differently for using any of these rights. You can use an authorized agent, and we may need to confirm your identity before we act on a request.
11. Children
Butterpages is for adults, and books are about adults. Don't upload photos of anyone under 18. If we learn we have one, we delete it.
12. Keeping it safe
Everything travels encrypted. Photos, pictures and books are stored privately and are only reachable through links that expire. Only the people on our team who make and check books can see them.
13. Changes
If we change this policy we update the date at the top. If a change matters, we tell customers with open orders by email. See also our Terms of Service.
